Bears RB Jenkins collects top honors in SW Va.

Avery Jenkins started slow in last Friday night’s 42-7 win over Lee High.

Then the second quarter began.

The Union senior rushed for three touchdowns despite playing sparingly over the final two quarters in the Brawl for the Bucket.

His efforts earned him the Times News/Johnson City Press Southwest Virginia Player of the Week honor for the second time this season.

Jenkins rushed for 190 yards and three touchdowns — all before halftime — on just nine carries in the Bears’ 47-7 win over the Generals in the annual Brawl for the Bucket.

Culbertson ran for 133 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries in Friday night’s 37-33 victory over Honaker.

Mullins piled up 145 yards and had the game-winning touchdown for the Blue Devils in their 14-8 win over Twin Springs.

Judd Shaffer, John Battle

Senior, RB

Shaffer totaled 109 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries to lead the Trojans to a 20-0 victory over Wise Central.

Luke Reed, Gate City

Sophomore, RB

Reed scored three touchdowns in the Blue Devils’ impressive late-game comeback against Marion, which held on for a 44-39 win.
